What the law says

  • Art. 4(1): where you cannot access the data directly, the data holder must make readily available data and metadata accessible to you without undue delay, free of charge, in a structured, commonly used and machine-readable format – on a simple electronic request.
  • Art. 5(1): on your request, the data holder must make the same data available to a third party you choose (for example an independent workshop), free of charge for you.
  • Art. 3: connected products must be designed so that data is easily accessible; this design rule applies to products placed on the market after 12 September 2026.
